Protecting Your Fireplace from Rodents

Protecting Your Fireplace from Rodents

by Home Fire Stove & Grill City Staff on March 30, 2018
Unless you have one as a pet, nobody wants rodents inside their home. Rodents can enter your home in a variety of ways, but your fireplace is a common entry point you may not have considered. Rodents want to enter your home so they can stay warm and enjoy your food supply. There are several pests that can attempt to enter your home through your chimney including birds, bats, squirrels, raccoons, and more.

While some of these creatures will make it into your chimney but not your home, they could still be causing problems and you should learn how to keep them away. One of the easiest and most effective ways to keep animals out of your chimney is by closing the flue after using your fireplace. You can also opt to install a door to your fireplace.

While closing your chimney’s flue may seem easy, many people forget to do so after using their fireplace. Installing a chimney cap can give you extra protection. You should also have your chimney inspected to make sure there aren’t any cracks that allow insects to enter. A door at the front of your fireplace can seal off an entry point for pests and can also help make sure your kids or pets don’t get too close to a fire.

Those aren’t the only ways to keep rodents and pests out of your fireplace. Burning your oldest firewood first can help prevent insects from growing a colony in firewood. Be sure to store the wood off the ground and don’t store it close to or inside your home. You should also follow some guidelines for keeping pests out of your home in general including sealing food in airtight containers, keeping trash cans tightly sealed, and keeping your home clean.
