You\u2019ll want to be sure you are practicing proper grilling safety, food safety, water safety, and more. Whether you\u2019re staying at home for a nice BBQ or going out to a lake, there are a number of ways to stay safe during Memorial Day weekend. Grill Safety Millions of Americans grill each Memorial Day, but not all of them practice proper grill safety. Be sure to thoroughly clean your grill of any grease and dust. You\u2019ll want to check that the tubes that lead into the burner aren\u2019t blocked. Keep any matches, cigarettes, or open flames away from your grill and be sure not to operate it inside a garage or carport or near a surface that could catch fire. When you are finished grilling, make sure the coals are completely out and the propane has been turned off. Food Safety When enjoying a meal outdoors you want to make sure that all perishable food is refrigerated within two hours, and one hour if the outside temperature is above 90 degrees. Cook beef to at least 145 degrees, hamburgers to 160 degrees, and fresh poultry to 165 degrees. Avoid cross-contamination by keeping uncooked meat away from other types of food.
